I feel ten feet tall. Instead of agonizing for weeks and allowing his criticism to infect every fiber in my cells, I’ve stood up for myself. Best of all I’ve used humor to do it.

I glance at my watch. 2 am. Where on earth has the time gone? They say time flies when you are having fun but fun or no fun it is time to go to bed.

Reluctantly I tear myself away from the computer. I may not like cleaning up the mess but I sure as eggs wasn’t going to sleep surrounded by salad.

Snoutts, our walking vacuum cleaner, will be back tomorrow and he’ll willingly take care of it, I remind myself as I survey the mess.

I side-step the quinoa disaster and pad down to Millie’s room.

It is in its usual meticulous state. Her books are arranged in alphabetical order and categorized into subjects. Her study desk is clear, with all her pencils and papers neatly stored in drawers.

She is like her father in that way. A place for everything and everything in its place. Being tidy came naturally to both of them. I’ve always been a bit of a fraud in that respect. I do my best to look like I’m organized but I feel as though I spend most of my life picking things up and putting them away somewhere else.

I get undressed, dropping my clothes on a heap on the floor and drape my blouse over the framed picture of Jonathan, Millie and I, beside her bed.

As I slip beneath the clean, crisp cotton sheets and snuggle beneath her blankets I feel an incredible sense of lightness. The sort of lightness that only comes when you are no longer burdened by the thankless task of trying to be all things to all people.

I’ve survived the meltdown of my marriage and experienced my first Internet break-up. No groveling. No trying to be liked. No anger.

The breakup was final.

Or so I thought.
